Michigan Health Insurance Exchange OverviewBeginning in 2014, under ObamaCare/Affordable Care Act (ACA), Michigan residents and small businesses can select health insurance from various options available through Health insurance Marketplace. Michigan’s health insurance exchange’s website will be run by federal government instead of state government. State government will maintain oversight on certification of qualified health plans.
Starting from Oct. 1, 2013, Michigan residents can shop for health insurance and compare plans through the Marketplace. Coverage purchased through this exchange will be effective from January 1, 2014.
Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) has received Qualified Health Plans (QHPs) information from 14 health insurance companies looking for participation in the state federal partnership based Michigan health insurance exchange. DIFS is going to review all plans to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.
According to a healthcare website, approximately 14% of Michigan’s non-elderly people are uninsured. Out of these 14% population, 94% people may qualify for either tax credits for purchasing coverage in the marketplace or for Medicaid if Michigan state choose to participate in the Medicaid expansion.

Michigan individuals and small business owners can purchase Michigan Qualified Health Plans or QHPs from the exchange. There are ObamaCare Michigan healthcare subsidies available for individuals whose income is below 400% of federal poverty level. ObamaCare Michigan Small Employer Tax Credits is available for small businesses.
