Virginia Health Insurance Exchange Overview:

Virginia state has opted to run the federally based health insurance exchange.


Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell notified Health and Human Services (HHS) that Virginia would not proceed with the state based exchange however the state would like to have the oversight of the health plans operated under health insurance exchange. In March 2013, this request was approved by HHS. Under Affordable Care Act (ACA), each state’s individuals and small businesses can select health insurance coverage through Health Insurance Exchange also known as Marketplace. This Marketplace will provide uninsured families and small businesses a new way to find health coverage that best fits their needs and their budgets. According to HHS finding, approximately 12% Virginians are currently uninsured and many of them could qualify for tax credits to purchase coverage in the Marketplace. Enrollment for these health plans begins October, 2013 and coverage will be effective from January 2014.

Virginia individuals and small business owners can purchase Virginia Qualified Health Plans (QHPs) from the insurance exchange. For individuals making less than 400% of federal poverty level, ObamaCare Virginia health plan subsidies are available. ObamaCare Virginia Small Employer Tax Credits is available for small businesses.
